Carmel Benson b.1950

Carmel Benson was born in Wexford. In 1972 she graduated from University College Dublin with a B.A. and H. Dip. Ed. In 1982 she graduated from Dún Laoghaire College of Art and Design, majoring in painting and printmaking. She joined the Graphic Studio Dublin where she later became a director. She was a lecturer in print at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology from 1985 - 1999 when she resigned and moved to Co. Wicklow where she now lives and works as a full time artist.

Combining figurative and abstract elements, her work is drawn from themes of childhood and nature. Through a strong use of colour, light and the simplification of perspective, it seeks to explore the integration or isolation
of the individual in space/time. Aspects of garden, field and hillside are portrayed as spaces of enclosure or expansion from the absorbed
stance, often evocative of childhood wonder and immersion. Elements from the established
domain of Art are sometimes integrated with the personal, bringing an aspect of the collective
to this individual vision.

Her work is included in many public and private collections including: the Irish Contemporary
Art Society, Bank of Ireland, AIB and the Arts Councils of Ireland.
