New Works by Visiting Artists 2009

The Visiting Artists Scheme, established since 1980 at Graphic Studio Dublin continues with this show, to play an important role in Irish Art. This visually challenging exhibition features iconic living Irish artists, acclaimed both nationally and internationally.

Martin Gale a renowned Irish artist for over twenty years creates what appears to be ordinary everyday scenes of social landscapes, but jolt and jar the viewer by engaging one to look further into the image and question what is happening? What is about to happen? Moreover we are reminded of single events in our own existence as we look at Gales narrative stills.

Geraldine O'Neill also manipulates the realist tradition to express the detritus of every day life. Her depiction of dead birds symbolizes our mortality and yet the childlike drawing of a rainbow incorporates a joyous innocence of love and life after death. As the artist Brian Maguire comments, "Her work refers to an essential truth of life via this dialectic of innocence and death."

Winner of the AIB prize 2007 Diana Copperwhite is an artist whose work deals primarily with remembering, not specific moments but the act of being remembered resulting in lyrical, ghostlike images. Copperwhite works and reworks the surface of the image to portray an unreal dreamlike quality.

Having widely exhibited in Dublin, London and continental Europe, we are delighted to welcome back William Crozier to our Visiting Artists programme. Crozier's still life and landscape carborundum prints capture his extraordinary use of vibrant colour to render the emotional intensity of his works.

Echoing her paintings, Jane O'Malley's fascination with line, shape and colour is reflected in these vivid carborundum prints of still lives. Flowers, jugs and landscape are juxtaposed instinctively to produce a textured pattern of form and colour.

One of Ireland's leading artists and inspired by the 'Romantic' landscape paintings of Jack B. Yeats and Patrick Collins, Seán McSweeney employs vibrant primary colours against dense blacks to evoke the energy, depth and spirit of his Sligo landscape and bog pools.
