Ruth O'Donnell
Lines of Descent
In this new body of work the artist Ruth O'Donnell juxtaposes images of fragile objects and the iconic beauty of the peacock motif. 'As time changes what endures?' poses the artist as she explores the meaning of immutable beauty through the image of the peacock and the mutable fragility of small delicate objects.

According to O'Donnell 'The blue peacock, with its long train of fabulous feathers must be the most iconic index of beauty in the history of art and is found in European and Asian art, from the Book of Kells to the Bayeux Tapestry. In cultural history the Peacock has represented dignity, immortality, rebirth as well as pride and vanity.' O'Donnell captures its beauty and dignity with her vibrant blues and recurring shapes and pattern set against neutral drawings of structured space. Similarly the artist portrays the beauty and vulnerability of fragile objects yet questions why certain objects survive and brings to mind what is lost, replaced or forgotten through time.
