The Hy-Brasil Expedition 2012
John Behan, Clare Henderson & James McCreary

Artists John Behan, Clare Henderson and James McCreary take the poem 'Hy-Braisail - The Isle of the Blest' by Gerard Griffin (1803-1840) based on the phantom island lying off the West coast of Ireland as inspiration for this three-person exhibition.

John Behan RHA, a sculptor of international standard and member of Aosdána, re-visits his theme of boats, the spiritual vessel. Fred Johnson, writer and poet remarks "John Behan's boats are rich fertile symbols: here a 'ghost boat', a flying vessel not of the world but sailing out of it towards an opposing consciousness". This mirrors the voyage of the peasant in Griffin's poem as he sails towards Hy-Brasil, to this other world where there is no sorrow or sickness and music is always to be heard. The vessel, central to Behan's work is embedded in our national consciousness as a symbol for hope, death, re-birth and departure.

Clare Henderson studied at NCAD and is a member of Graphic Studio Dublin since receiving a Graphic Studio Dublin Graduate Award in 2005. She has exhibited widely in Ireland and Poland. Henderson's suite of prints explore mans relationship with his surrounding habitat and that of the ocean. Her minimalist work portrays the sea and islands veiled in mist, rain and fog. She investigates our relationship with islands; their remoteness and isolation, the journey from home to another place bringing to mind other twin issues such as home and abroad, inside and outside, self and other.

James McCreary, a master printer and member of Aosdána presents a suite of luxuriously tonal mezzotints. He reproduces the sparkling greens and blues of the sea set against brightly coloured and playful buoys. In each work he creates a magical space, a realm of solace, which conjures the mystical journey to the phantom island Hy-Brasil 'Men thought it a region of sunshine and rest. The golden clouds curtained the deep where it lay. And it looked like an Eden, away far away!'
