New Works by Carmel Benson

Continuing to draw from themes of childhood and nature, and how the two interact with one another, Carmel Benson's new works examine the tenuous balance between a child's absorbed integration and awed observation in the natural world.

With a strong use of colour and light, and combining both figurative and abstract elements, she explores a number of different paths: the "Turning" series shows stilled moments of the motion of natural phenomena, alongside a small cruciform child that is barely discernible; in the "Connect" group of images she portrays a childlike identification with animal, bird or plant and the volatile feelings of both wonder and wariness that this can lead to; the "Garden Stage" group uses bright, compact spaces to reveal moments of planned predation; the ongoing "Forest" series depicts primal human rituals and lore and their potential for both exploration and entrapment.

Carmel Benson lives and works in Co. Wicklow, Ireland. She is a graduate of University College, Dublin and of Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design. For several years she was a director of Graphic Studio Dublin and a lecturer at Dun Laoghaire College of Art, Design and Technology. In 1998 she resigned to concentrate entirely on her own art. She has had several solo painting and print exhibitions and has exhibited widely in Ireland, the UK, France, Spain, Taiwan and the US, among other countries. Her work is included in many public and private art collections including the Arts Councils of Ireland, The Irish Contemporary Arts Society, The Bank of Ireland and the AIB.
