12 September 2013 - 05 October 2013
2013 contains many anniversaries, the two most significant in Graphic Studio Dublin's history being the 25th anniversary of when Graphic Studio Gallery opened its doors, and the centenary of one of Ireland's greatest artists, Tony O'Malley.
Tony O'Malley was born in Co. Kilkenny in 1913 and after working for many years with the Munster and Leinster Bank, took early retirement and went on to pursue his long-term passion, painting. Entirely self-taught, O'Malley brought about his own form of visual language through his wonderfully timeless use of colour and brush strokes. O'Malley lived in Cornwall for over 30 years before returning in 1990 to live permanently in Ireland. In 1999 Tony was invited to take part in Graphic Studio Dublin's Visiting Artist Programme and there started a three year relationship between artist and studio, which resulted in many of the works in this exhibition.
The Visiting Artist Programme is now in it's 33rd year. During this time the studio has invited Irish and international artists to work with master printmakers in developing a body of prints that expands the boundaries of their usual practices. This creative collaboration manifests itself in special and often unexpected ways as can be seen in this exhibition. The work reveals itself as an important historical archive, telling the story of the often crucial relationship between masterprinter and visiting artist. From the inception of the programme, a small number of masterprinters at Graphic Studio Dublin have been guiding and mentoring artists through the printmaking process. These skills combine to create editions that are unique to Graphic Studio Dublin.
This exhibition celebrates the significant contribution Tony O'Malley made to Irish art, especially printmaking and coincides with other exhibitions around Ireland celebrating this extraordinary, spiritual and undeniably unique artist's work.
